Home Ec Day!

This morning, the girls rode their bikes with Troy to our new house to make sure stuff was picked up for the window people to come today. When they got there (before 8:00), the window people were there and had already pulled off most of the storm windows!!! We were impressed. They had to quit about 10:30 or 11:00 this morning because of rain, but they're planning to be back early tomorrow to finish up most of it.

This week is a bit unusual. With family and others coming later this week and a lot of work being done on the house, we have decided to temporarily move our focus from the semi-traditional classroom of math, language arts, etc. to a more practical side of learning.

So today, Abigail and Elizabeth helped to make snickerdoodles and blonde brownies. Interestingly enough, we had a math lesson in the middle of the blonde brownies on fractions as the recipe called for 2/3 cup margarine. Abigail worked on washing dishes again with some instruction (she loved it! ... hurray!), vacuumed her room, helped to fold clothes, and helped with Jeremiah while I made dinner. She was diligent about each thing and really enjoyed cleaning. She took about 30 minutes to vacuum her room and the hallway ... taking care to move the toybox and vacuum behind it as well as cleaning out between the bookshelf and the wall. In the hallway, she determined that she must remove the grate from the heater vent and vacuum down inside it (see pic below). She said with all of the people we have coming that it must be really clean! WOW! I do like things clean and admit that I have MUCH room for improvement, but where does she get this?? I think I need to put her to work more often!! I asked her how she knew that the grate could be lifted off of the vent and she said, "Oh, I figured that out a while back ... I noticed that it didn't have nails in it and I wondered what was holding it down ... and then I just had to find out!" :D

It was a very busy and very good day!

  2. Wow! You're lucky to have such a good house keeper. Hopefully Branna will aspire to be like Abigail! :)
